How to Prepare for Climbing Kilimanjaro: A Complete Guide
Standing on the summit of Kilimanjaro at sunrise is a moment you’ll never forget. But reaching Uhuru Peak takes more than determination — with the right preparation, your chances of a safe, successful and enjoyable climb rise dramatically.
1. Get Physically Fit
Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb, but it’s a long, demanding one. Start training at least 8–12 weeks before your climb with regular hikes, cardio and leg strength work, and break in your boots thoroughly.
2. Understand Acclimatization
Altitude is the single biggest factor in whether climbers reach the top. “Pole pole” — slowly, slowly — is the golden rule. Choosing a route with an extra day significantly improves your summit odds.
3. Pack the Right Gear
Kilimanjaro takes you through five climate zones, so layering is everything: a warm sleeping bag, waterproof jacket, broken-in boots, headlamp and sun protection. Much of this can be rented locally in Arusha.
