The Great Migration: When & Where to See It

Every year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move in a great clockwise loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Here’s how to time your safari to catch the action.

December–March: Calving Season

The herds gather on the southern Serengeti plains, where thousands of calves are born — and predators are never far behind.

April–June: The Move North

The columns begin their trek northwest through the central and western Serengeti.

July–September: River Crossings

The dramatic Mara and Grumeti river crossings — the iconic image of the migration — typically happen now. This is the most sought-after window.
